The memories of the stuffing we received at the hands of Brentford during the final stages of last season are still fresh in the minds of the blue and white army.
At the time we made excuses, “we’re safe anyway”, “the players looked like they were on holiday”. Nevertheless 5-1 is a defeat, and an embarrassing one at that.
But for Town the opportunity to seek revenge is not one they have to wait long for. As the fixtures would have it, Town host Brentford on the first day of the new 2016/17 season.
If history is to be believed however, it could be a sad afternoon for the terriers. Our last victory against the Bees dates back to 06 December 2014, winning 2-1. Since then we have suffered 3 rather heavy defeats, 4-1, 4-2 and 5-1. Let’s hope theirs not a sting in the tail, no pun intended.
The Town faithful should be in good voice and the South Stand packed with fans, flags and banners. There are even rumours of a record opening game attendance down at the John Smith Stadium. One thing that can be guaranteed, the atmosphere will be electric.
A sea of blue and white will face the players as they walk out of the tunnel and take to the pitch. I suspect Town will fire out of the blocks, immediately applying a high pressing game and attempt to control the possession.
We saw time and time again that Town could cause any team problems going forward but sometimes looked vulnerable defending. With a new look defence, a real attacking threat and a number of natural born leaders you’d better be worried Brentford. We’re ready for you!
