With the start we’ve had, I could have picked from a whole host of players; Elias Kachunga has hit the ground running in English football, Christopher Schindler has shored up the defence, Danny Ward has not put a hand wrong or Michael Hefele just for being Michael Hefele.
Instead, the award goes to a player who’s composed, tenacious and controlled performances have earned him a place in the heart of every Town fan and I’m certain it comes as no surprise, the first award of the season goes to none other than Aaron Mooy.
The Australian midfielder, on-loan from giants Manchester City, having recently joined the Premier League outfit from sister club Melbourne City, has made an immediate impact and has fans purring over how easily he can dictate each and any match.
For too long Town have been without a real ball playing midfielder, we were teased with glimpses of Phillip Billing last year but in truth he is a player that is still developing. In Mooy we have a ready-made midfielder that is assured on the ball and aggressive in defence.
Playing 416 out of a possible 450 minutes in the opening five matches of the season Mooy has been a pillar in the success of Huddersfield. Mooy patrols the midfield, snapping up the loose ball then calmly picking a simple pass to begin a Huddersfield attack. to crunch the numbers, Mooy is averaging around 70 passes per game, at a successful completion rate of over 85%*.
While his talent is clear to see I still believe there is more to come from the Aussie with Manchester City surely sat back admiring the way he’s lit up the Championship so far this term. If his current form continues throughout the remainder of the Championship campaign we could definitely see him playing his football with the world’s elite next season. Possibly with Huddersfield.
